“. . . she held
a ghost smile between her teeth
and in her eyes the ghost of a mother’s
pride as she combed the rust-coloured
hair left on his skull and then –
singing in her eyes – began carefully
to part it… In another life this
would have been a little daily
act of no consequence before his
breakfast and school; now she
did it like putting flowers
on a tiny grave.”

Our Purpose
Íjùtà is dedicated to raising awareness about the genocide of Igbo people and other victims in Nigeria from 1966 to 1970. Our goal is to educate, support, and commemorate the victims while advocating for respect of lives and the dignity of people.
Join us to mourn the victims and to protect their memories, together. When we mourn together, we give ourselves permission to dream our pasts into our future and ourselves into each other.

Our Initiatives
01

Our awareness campaigns aim to shed light on and educate about the genocide of the Igbo, ensuring that present and future generations learn from the past.
02

Support our fundraising activities to help us continue our mission of remembrance and education.
03

We strive to commemorate genocide and champion respectful remembrance of the dead based on the principle that doing so resurrects the living. We commemorate through memorial projects, educational events, monuments, and community building.
04

Our educational programs focus on teaching about genocide, human violations, and the importance of remembrance.
